Local Broadcasting
FSJ goes South Africa by Nora Lüddecke
We are a group of about fifty people, who are involved with social service in Germany. We work for the german sportyouth and do our service for one year in a sports club, a sport project, school, kindergarten or a sport association to support them. Through the partnership of Mpumalanga and Northrhein-Westfalia (NRW), Germany and the involvement of the SportyouthNRW over many years in project like SPACE (SPort Agains CrimE)and YESS (Youth Empowerment Scheme through Sport) we got the possibility to visit Mpumalanga during the soccer world cup.Why are we engaged in a social year?
A voluntary social year is a good possibility to get new ideas about our own personal skills before our professional future starts. During this year we collect new experiences which support our self-confidence and help us to understand life and people better. On the other hand young men are able to replace their military service by a social year in sport.Right now we are in South Africa for more than two and a half weeks and try to impart our fun of sport to the kids, play and communicate a lot with them. We have already participated in a scouts camp, a local school and an orphanage to meet children from South Africa and do sport and fun days with them. To bring a smile on a child’s face is a great feedback for our work.Furthermore we also visit some special places like the “Kruger National Park” or watch some games of the world cup 2010 directly in the stadion.
Feel it Germany, it is here by Moritz Belmann
Four years ago, the Fifa soccer world cup took place in Germany. Now, a lot of Germans are here to celebrate and support the German national team. A few members of these German fans are here in Mpumalanga. The group of young sportive people from Northrhein-Westfalia (NRW) is exited to stay here wire the world cup. “Soccer is our national sport. We all believe, that we will win the trophy”, says Thorsten Auer, a member of this group. For this reason, it is clear, that all Germans, who travelled to South Africa support their team from the beginning till the final, hopefully on 11th July in Johannesburg.
Hence, soccer will influence the life of so many Germans in South Africa and Germany.Especially, the young Germans from NRW are crazy for soccer. Everyday they watch every match in television or in the official Fifa-Fan-Park in Nelspruit. There, they celebrate teams from all over the world. Especially, the connection between the Africans and the German group from Mpumalanga, inside the Fifa-Fan-Fest, is a symbol of connection between two cultures. The Germans start dancing with Africans to local music and the Africans learn German songs wire the game. “We support South Africa, of course. And if ‘Bafana Bafana’ plays against Germany, we hope to see a good and a fair game”, explains Mario Hellweg, another German from NRW. In generally speaking, the young persons from Germany are surprised about their host country. “South Africa is a very wonderful land. Every person seems to love soccer and look forward to host the whole world”, describes Sonja Metz, a well performed soccer player. But what will happen, if Germany wins the world cup?
For the Germans, the fourth win of the championship is a national dream. Since the world cup 2006, every person believes this dream. For this reason, the success of the German national team is very important. Of course, the success is connected with the national coach. Joachim Loew, the German national coach, had so many problems in the preparation time. A lot of Germans criticized him for his choice to nominate several players. But after the 4:0 against Australia, all Germans are happy and proud of their national team. For all Germans, it is a pleasure to live their national dream here in South Africa. “The stadiums and the whole atmosphere are so nice, here. It seems that we are at home”, adds Sonja Metz.
Like the German national team four years ago, ‘Bafan Bafana’ has the chance to change the society here in South Africa. “Now, we hope that the South African team can unity your country, too”, says Moritz Belmann a young Judoka from NRW. This hope connects Germans and South Africans.
Four years ago, the world celebrated in Germany. Now, the Germans celebrate the world in South Africa.
